Needle painted Hibiscus

This project is carried out in long and short stitch with 1 thread

The purpose of this work is to embroider a new subject in needle painting. We have already done several projects of this kind together but I know that many of you still find this technique very difficult and sometimes even give up, fearing not getting a satisfactory result.

So I will try to guide you step by step, with the help of many photos and explanations. I hope that with the help of this tutorial you will convince yourself of the beauty and versatility of this technique.

A complete file including the watercolor picture, the pattern, and the numbering of the work can be downloaded HERE.

The most beautiful needle paintings are made with the most basic embroidery thread, which is simply stranded cotton.

Taking advantage of the very large palette of the DMC collection whose colors are readily available, here is the first choice of threads that I think I will use to embroider these flowers. It is certainly not definitive and may be modified during the work.

DMC stranded cotton 902, 815, 816, 891, 892, 893, 894, 818, 819, 3822, B5200.

These are only the colors needed to embroider the flowers, we will deal with the leaves later.

I chose to embroider this hibiscus on twine colored linen to bring out all the shades used from lightest to darkest.

Flower 1

petal e

This petal is embroidered with colors # 819, 818, 353, 894, 892, 891, and 816.

The color 353 does not appear on the photo, because as soon as the work began, I added an intermediate color between the n° 818 and 894, finding the gap between the 2 shades too large.

Prepare to work the petal by outlining it in split backstitch with color 819 and 1 thread.

First, place the color 819 with long and short stitch using the photo as a reference.

Continue to fill in the petal, still in long and short stitch 1 thread with color 818.

Continue to work down the petal, now adding color 353. To give the petal its bounced look, it is necessary to respect the direction of the stitches.

Embroider the lower red part of the petal in continuation of the work done previously with color 892. Do not hesitate to place a few stitches high up to mark the central part of the design.

Finish filling the petal with color 891 and finally with a few stitches of color 816 at the end of the embroidery area.
