An Easter egg in the colors of time

Here’s the 2024 version of my traditional embroidered Easter egg.

I’ve chosen it full of freshness and sweetness. I hope it will accompany you in your celebration of this holiday, which this year, although dependent on an early calendar, often announces the beginning of spring.

You’ll find the design to download HERE and the explanations needed to make it in the article below.

Here’s also a list of the colors I’ve used to give this work a calm and serene atmosphere.

The work is entirely realized using DMC stranded cotton and variegated stranded threads from House of Embroidery.

  • Background,   DMC 729, 676 and 745

  • Twigs, House of Embroidery Bark 72C

  • Catkins, DMC 543, 152, 640. House of Embroidery Thatch 59C and Herbs 92C

  • Primroses, DMC 677, 900, and House of Embroidery Privet 6C

  • Rosehips, DMC 819, 152, House of Embroidery 44A  Antiquity and 25C Lemon and Lime

Dot the surface of the egg irregularly with stars in a 2-thread straight stitch, using the lightest color. Overlap a little on the flowered part for continuity. Fill in the area between the stars in a seeding stitch with 1 thread. Use the darkest color on the right part of the design, the medium on the left and the lightest in the center. Embroider a 2-thread French knot 1 wrap in the center of each star with the color corresponding to the seeding stitch and finish by embroidering the outline of the egg in a 2-thread stem stitch with the darker color.

Embroider the rosehips using the 3 shades of pink, the largest and medium one in long and short stitch and the smallest in satin stitch, all with 1 thread. Rosehip leaves are made in close fly stitch with 2 threads. Embroider the 2 large leaves in stem stitch and lazy daisy stitch, all with 2 threads. Daisies are embroidered in straight stitch, starting with white petals and using 2 threads, then interspersing dark petals with a single thread. Forget-me-nots are made with French knots using 2 threads and 2 wraps.

This is a close-up of the left side of the egg…

Catkins are embroidered in long and short stitch with 1 thread and leaves in double lazy daisy stitch with 2 threads. Stems are embroidered in stem stitch with a single thread. Primrose petals and calyx are embroidered in satin stitch and leaves in juxtaposed stem stitch, all with 1 thread.
