Slavonia

With Slavonia, I invite you on a journey to an imaginary Central Europe, where folk art is traditionally expressed through wood painting that adorns everyday objects. This circular embroidery is loosely inspired by these Slavic folk motifs, stylized floral compositions, graphic leaves, and plant movements that form a rich and exuberant decor.

Designed to adorn the lid of a wooden box, the composition was conceived as a genuine embroidered decoration.

I carefully selected a palette of warm, bright-colored threads that harmonize with the warm hue of the wood to create a subtle interplay between pattern, color, and tradition.

The embroidery measures 8 cm in diameter and is done on vanilla-colored linen, which highlights the chosen thread palette. As usual, you can download the pattern HERE.

For this design, I worked mainly with DMC stranded cotton, to which I added two House of Embroidery variegated cotton to enrich the shades and bring more depth to the composition.

For many years, I have enjoyed using wooden boxes and trays made by the American brand Sudberry House. For Slavonia, I chose their simplest model, the “Simply Square Box,” to transform this embroidery into a practical and decorative everyday object.

Of course, this is only a suggestion: everyone can make this design their own and adapt it as they wish, whether by changing the colors, the fabric, or the final use of the embroidery.

This pattern uses simple stitches, mainly worked with a single strand of yarn, making it a particularly enjoyable project to work on.

Detailed explanations of each of these stitches are available in the “Stitches” menu of the blog, to guide you step by step through the creation of this pattern.

Here are some close-up photos to illustrate the work and guide you through the embroidery process.

I hope Slavonia will accompany you as it has accompanied me, and that it will find a beautiful place on your box or any other medium that speaks to your sensibility.
