Schwalm traditional design

Here are the explanations necessary to realize a Schwalm traditional design.

To do this work you will need

  • Linen fabric  6 counts

  • Perle cotton  n°8

  • DMC thread ” Spécial à broder” n°25

  • Stranded cotton

In this article we will learn to embroider the outline of the design.

For this, we will use the following stitches

Here is a very simple diagram of the coral stitch.

I never used this stitch other than in combination with the lazy daisy stitch to achieve the outline of the patterns in this particular technique.

You can download the pattern of this embroidery HERE

Trace the pattern on the fabric using a water-soluble pencil. Position it by following a  straight thread of the fabric.

To get a well-positioned basket, I first pulled a thread around its outline. The bottom and the 2 sides are embroidered with satin stitch on a height of 4 threads and the top in Palestrina stitch, all with Perle cotton.

The stems are embroidered with Portuguese stem stitch. Birds and tulips are made with coral stitch and lazy daisy stitch. Start by embroidering the coral stitch on the outside of the pattern then the lazy daisy stitch. Use Perle cotton for this work.

The leaves are embroidered with herringbone stitch and stranded cotton 3 threads.

The heart and the large central flower are made as precedently. The stem between the 2 patterns is embroidered with Palestrina stitch, all with Perle cotton. The leaves are embroidered with herringbone stitch and stranded cotton 3 threads.
