Stumpwork

Here is the engraving I chose to make a three-dimensional realization and transform it into a work mixing several techniques of contemporary embroidery.

In its original size, this project measures about 14/14 cm and I chose to embroider it on sand colored linen.

It will be made in three parts. We will first work the background of the subject in a classical way, then we will embroider the body of the bee using the technique of plumetis (satin stitch executed on a padded background) and Turkish work. To finish, we will have to realize the wings of the insect and some flowers exclusively in Stumpwork. For this, I will guide you with explanations and detailed photos through several articles.

The pattern of this project can be downloaded in the menu “Patterns 2021” of this blog or directly HERE.

You will notice that unlike usual, the downloadable file is composed of several pages. The first one is made to designate the different parts of the work, the second one contains the pattern of the background of the project, and the third one comprises all the elements that we will realize in stumpwork.

The background design is the one to be transferred to the main fabric. The stumpwork elements will be used in the final phase of the work and I will indicate how to use them.

The background threads

For the realization of the background of this work, I used the following threads

DMC stranded cotton 844, 545, 546, 746, 676, 728, 3828, 869

and here are the first stitches…

you will find the explanations next week!
