Hollyhocks

part 2

This article explains how to create the flower at the bottom left of the design, embroidered in the pink tones suggested last week.

I added 2 new variegated threads to the original palette and used a series of various stitches to give structure to the pattern. You’ll find explanations of these stitches in the menu Stitches of this blog.

The 6 outer petals on the upper part of the flower are made with the colors 963, 3716 and Camellia 35C.

The inner and lower petals are embroidered with the colors 963, 3708, 309, 777 and Flame 43A. Vary the placement to suit your fantasy.

Start by embroidering a fairly wide blanket stitch with 2 threads on the top of the petal. All petals are made in the same way, but with different color placements.

Place straight stitches in the spaces between the blanket stitches with a second color, then finish filling the petal with a 3rd color, all with 2 threads.

Use the colors you’ve chosen, varying their placement as you see fit.

Here’s a photo of the finished outer petals…

… as well as the complete corolla.

This part of the flower is embroidered with the color 963 and the ribbed spider web stitch. It is worked linearly rather than in the round with 2 threads. After fanning out the threads on the surface, place the stitch in a row, always in the same direction, thus starting again at the beginning of each new passage.

Here’s a photo of the finished part.

I chose a weaving stitch and color 777 to fill this part of the flower. First place the warp of this work with 2 threads as shown in the photo.

The weaving itself is carried out with 3 threads, passing alternately over then under 2 threads. Always work in the same direction, restarting each passage at the beginning of a row and shifting the passage over under stitches by one thread to the right.

The rounded part that completes the center of the flower is made in spaced wheathear stitch with color 3708. I then inserted straight stitches in the spaces between the branches of the stitch. I used color 777 for the upper part and 43A for the lower part. All the work is done with 2 threads.

This series of dots representing the flower’s stamens are embroidered in 2-thread single spider web stitch using colors 907 and 3348.

Here they are.

The leaves are embroidered with the same shades of green in 2-thread, close fly stitch.
