Hollyhocks

part 3

This article explains how to make the two remaining flowers.

I used a variety of stitches to give structure to the design. You’ll find explanations of these stitches in the stitches menu of this blog.

To make the orange flower, I added two new threads.

The 6 outer petals on the upper part of the flower are made with colors 353, 351 and Flame 43C. The inner and lower petals are embroidered with colors 353, 351, 349, 815 and Flame 43C.

Vary the placement according to your whim.

All the petals are made in the same way, but with different color placements. Start by embroidering a fairly widely spaced blanket stitch on the upper part of the petal and add straight stitches in the spaces, finishing by filling the surface, all with 2 threads.

Mark the top heart of the flower with a 1-thread  splitbackstitch.

Vertically pad the upper part of this heart with 3 threads.

Start the needle lace by placing a row of blanket stitches (small and medium spaced) hooked to the backstitch, with 2 threads.

To cover the needle lace surface, place rows of blanket stitches hooked into each other, using 2 threads and always working in the same direction.

Now pad the lower part of the heart with 2 threads.

Cover this part with satin stitch using 1 thread.

Outline the edges and veins of the large lower petal with stem stitch using 2 threads.

Fill the entire area with long and short stitch 1 thread, varying the colors.

To make the orange flower, I added two new threads.

The 6 outer petals of the upper part of the flower are embroidered with the colors 727, 725, Daffodil 47A. The inner petals and those at the bottom are embroidered with the colors 972, 741, 720 and Tropicana 85C. The stamens are embroidered with DMC 3348 and 907.

Vary the placement according to your whim.

Here’s a picture of the upper petals of this flower, embroidered in the same way as the 2 previous flowers.

Here’s a picture of the petals just below.

And finally, the whole corolla.

Fill the upper part of the heart with vertical rows of 2-thread Palestrina stitch.

The lower part of the heart is covered with a lattice stitch. First fill in the surface with long and short stitch and 1 thread. Then form the lattice grid with diagonal straight stitches using 2 threads. Place a very small straight stitch on each lattice cross with 1 thread. For best results, work these small stitches diagonally.

Finish by embroidering 2 rows of overlock chain stitch at the top, all with 2 threads.

Embroider the stamens with French knots using 2 threads and 2 wraps.

In the heart of the orange flower I used the needle lace technique. It’s a very specific technique and to help you achieve it, I suggest you watch the following tutorial.

The basics of how to do needlelace using three different stich …

It’s a little long but very comprehensive, and by looking at it you’ll have all the information you need to make a successful needlelace yourself.
