“Flower basket” needlecase

Background work

First of all, here is the history of this project…

Initially, this new needlecase was simply intended to replace my already well-worn one and also to serve as an excuse to offer you a little relaxing holidays work.

And then, two weeks ago, I moved and what happens when you move? You are obliged to tidy up and sort out your things and it is there that you find treasures of threads forgotten for a very long time.

I was so surprised and delighted to find them that I decided to use them immediately to make this needle holder not a conventional realization but an original, precious, and unique object.

This is what I will try to explain to you now!

First of all, you will find as usual the drawing of this project to download HERE or in the section “Patterns 2022” of the menu.

As for the choice of colors, I was inspired by the material at my disposal. I encourage you to do the same, following your taste and using the threads you have.

You will see that with a little imagination, you can use the most unlikely materials to obtain surprising effects.

You will also notice that the drawing is only needed as a support because of the different textures used it is impossible to follow the outlines exactly.

To embroider the background of this work I preferred to use conventional threads to leave the star to the bouquet which will be made with all kinds of different threads that I will detail next week in the second part of this project.

The background of the work is made with the 2 shades of House of Embroidery stranded cotton in color 36 (the Sea) and metallic threads #4 2933 and 094 from Au Ver à Soie. I also used small seed beads in matching colors.

This background is made with only 2 different stitches that form random patterns. For this, you will use a simple weaving stitch and straight star stitches, all with 1 thread.

Here is the same work in the second color.

In this picture, you can see the succession of patterns from one surface to another.

Some weaving lines and straight stitches are highlighted with metallic thread, here with the darker color 2933…

…and here with the lighter color 094.

The outlines of the various rectangles are embroidered with a 3-thread backstitch with the darkest colored cotton and then overlocked with the metallic thread of the corresponding color.

Here’s a sneak peek of the bouquet that will be explained in next week’s article!
