Satin stitch  is a series of straight stitches that are used to completely cover a section of a design.

In order to maintain a smooth edge, shapes can be outlined with split back stitch before the entire shape including the outline is covered with satin stitch.

Plumetis or padded satin stitch  is satin stitch with a little embossed or dimensional look. This is because we first give the pattern a little padding at the base before doing the satin stitch.

First, outline the design with a split back stitch. Then fill the inside with straight stitches and cover the padding with satin stitch on the outside of the split stitch outline.
