At Winter’s Door

The baubles

After adding the foliage, flowers, and ribbon that make up the vegetal structure of our wreath, there is just one last step left to reveal its full magic.

This week, we are deliberately moving away from the natural world to introduce a more precious, brighter element: Christmas baubles suspended at the heart of the composition.

To mark this break and emphasize their decorative nature, I chose a palette that is in stark contrast to the deep reds and lush greens used until now.

These bluish hues, enhanced with metallic sparkles, add an unexpected touch. They catch the eye, capture the light, and give the whole look a festive feel that fully celebrates the spirit of Christmas.

Embroidery on baubles

To embroider these little sparkling baubles, I opted for simplicity in both materials and stitches. I worked with two DMC stranded threads in shades of blue, which I combined with two matching metallic threads from the extensive range offered by Au Ver à Soie in Paris. This combination of textures creates a subtle interplay between matte and shiny, perfect for evoking the sparkle of festive decorations.

For the stitches, I stuck to the basics: stem stitch, straight stitch, satin stitch, and backstitch to highlight the patterns. These are simple techniques, but they allow for a variety of effects and give each ball its own unique character.

Here are the colors I used to embroider these baubles.

With these final touches of light, our wreath is now complete and ready to shine for the holidays.
