Japanese inspiration – assembling

In this article, you will find the necessary explanations to set up this project.

The assembly of this ball is done in 3 steps. First, you have to assemble 2 half-spheres consisting of 6 pieces each pentagonal, and then you have to fit them into each other. Finally, the ball is filled by a side left open for this purpose and finally closed with hem stitch.

The assembly is done entirely by hand. The pieces are assembled on the reverse side of the work (embroidered side against embroidered side) and along the green embroidered edge.

Assembly of the first half-sphere

Choose a center piece and then attach a new pentagon to each side of that piece by sewing it to the wrong side of the work and exactly along the edge embroidered in stem stitch, here in green.

Here is the other side of this part.

Now connect the 5 side pieces by their sides as indicated by the arrows on the picture and on the backside as before.

Here is the half-sphere obtained after attaching the 5 pentagonal pieces together.

Assembly of the second half-sphere

same process as above

Assembly of the 2 parts of the ball

Now nest the 2 half-spheres by sewing the sides of one with the sides of the other one, always in the same way on the back of the work. Start by attaching a “tip” of the first half-sphere (black dot on the picture)…

…with a “hollow” of the second half-sphere (black dot on this picture) leaving one side open to fill the ball. Once the ball is finished, it may be necessary to add a few stitches on the seams to make them perfectly clean.
