Edwardian Parrot

Orchid part 2

Here are the explanations and the pictures necessary to embroider the 2 large open flowers at the top of the orchid.

I used the same threads as for the buds but adding the colors 778 and 316 to embroider the corollas. The stamens are made with color 154.

First, embroider the outline of the corolla with split backstitch 1 thread and the color 778, then indicate the direction of the stitches.

Embroider the edge of the corolla with color 778.

Add color 316 and then color 3078 to partially fill the center of the flower.

Finish the center of the corolla with color 3756. Then embroider the stamens with straight stitch 1 thread and color 154 to form an arc.

Embroider the petals in the same way as the buds made last week using the same range of colors.

Finish by embroidering the backside of the petal with satin stitch 1 thread and color 963. Be aware to respect the direction of the stitches.

Flower on the left

Proceed in the same way as for the previous flower, first embroider the edge of the corolla with the color 778 and then add shadows with the color 316.

Embroider the backside of the petal with color 3716 following the general pattern movement. In this example, it is not necessary to cause a break by opposing the direction of the stitches, it is enough to use the color appropriately to obtain the desired effect.

Embroider the petal using the whole range of pink threads available, from the lightest to the darkest.

How to underline the contours of the patterns

On the reference design that we use to embroider this parrot, all the contours of the patterns are underlined with a fairly thick dark gray line.

Not having found this particularly aesthetic, I had first decided not to embroider any outline, as on the photo of the orchid appearing in the article of last week.

However, slowly, lookingfrom time to time at the result, I could not help finding an unfinished taste at that embroidery.

So, I tried it out and here is the result.

I outlined each piece of the pattern with split backstitch and 1 thread but trying to match the colors of the edges with those of the patterns. You can see the result in the 2 photos below.

I used the color 924 (new thread) to outline the green parts, 154 for the pink and yellow parts and 932 (also a new thread) for the blue parts.
